capture problems with Vegas Video 3

Does anybody have any idea what my problem is. I try to capture footage from my Sony 300 mini DV deck onto vegas video 3. The drivers are working and it is operating the deck. The captured footage is unusable. It breaks up into pixels every couple of seconds and the sound breaks up at the same time. I am a beginner with Vegas Video and am just working my way through the manual but can't get any further until I've sorted this one out.
I'm using a Pentium III 800 with 256 ram and have 2 hard discs. The capture card I'm using is the Pinnacle Studio DV card (OHCI 1394) which I assume is OK as the Vegas will operate the deck without any problems.
Cheers

Sounds like your system is up to the task, but a little system tweaking is in order. Please start here:

it would appear that all is well with my card and drivers. The Vegas does actually capture, and it is showing microsoft dv camera and vcr in the capture display. It is dropping more frames than it captures, although it shows frames dropped 0 as it is capturing - it's just that you can see the pixels as it's going through. When you've finished capturing, you get the frames dropped message.
any ideas?

proper system configuration can be tricky, but it has been covered many times on this and the www.creativecow.net vegas forum. Try searching either forum for "dropped frames" or "IRQ".

Just to update with regard to my capture problems - I have downloaded the upgrade to version 3.0c, checked graphic cards, direct x etc but still no joy. I am running Windows 2000,. My machine always recognises the DV device, and never crashes or freezes on capture - the picture (even on preview without capturing) just breaks up into pixels. The same card using the Pinnacle studio DV programme to capture produces a perfect capture which I then import into Vegas and can output perfectly. (Ps - this was happening when I only had Vegas on the machine in case anyone thinks that it's anything to do with Studio DV being used as well). We've also tried another capture card in case that was the problem, but no joy. Strange one! We'll no doubt get to the bottom of it eventually.
