hi, curious if anyone has a tip for me..
i have some old vhs tapes i want to digitize... and i have always done so by first running into my camera, capturing to tape, then capturing my tape with vegas..
curious if i could digitize in one step
connect vhs deck to camera, camera to computer, and get the digital files in 1 step, versus 2 (going to camera tape first)

i would like to capture directly to my computer through my camera.

thank you
pj

PJ,

What you are talking about is referred to as "pass thru" and some cameras support it, some don't.

Hook up your camera without a tape in it and see if the video passes thru to your computer. If it does, then it should work. You will have to turn off the option that gives Vegas device control.

Whyen you capture, make sure you disable Device Control, otherwise Vegas will try and control your DV camera

Thanks PeterWright - I didn't know about/hadn't seen that Device Control disabling ability - because Vegas was always telling me to insert a tape in the camera I have been using WinDV for all my passthrough captures. Guess I can use Vegas now!

Your camera supports pass through.

Take a look at purchasing Scenalyzer (ScLive) to do the capture. It has optical scene detection which can help you decide where to put chapter markers, etc. Also lots of other capture goodies.
