I purchased the MAGIX USB converter used in Rescue your video tapes and want to capture the video in VEGAS. Is this possible via a USB connection or do I need specific capture software?
Does the import have a lot of video noise? At least more than we are now use to? If you don't have it already, you may want to take a look at Neat Video. I use it on all of my captured VHS videos and on clips shot in low light that are grainy.
I called MAGIX twice today to ask about capture of video via USB in VP14. They didn't really know notwithstanding their website categorically states its NOT supported. They said it "might be" and that I should put the question in writing to them which I did.
It's certainly possible to capture video from a USB device in VP but it's dependent on the driver. I've managed this successfully before with a cheapo £13 USB capture device off eBay, but have another (more expensive device) which Vegas can't see. From memory you also need to disable a lot of the default options in the Vegas Capture window to get it working properly as its really geared up for FW capture.
You also quickly discover that without a TBC all cheap/USB capture devices are utter junk, but thats another matter entirely...
Thanks Clive. I'm going to try tonight. I paid £35 for this device from MAGIX!!!! - without the software so its not that cheap and I have to pay another £30 for the Video Easy Software....... RYVT is only £45
According to Magix.com site, RYVT comes with Video Easy. Somehow you managed to purchase the device without the software, it seems. The current price for the package is 80 USD.
If it works with Video Easy, then it should work with Movie Edit Pro and Video Pro X. In that case, you're good for 5 months of trials.
I can't help any further. My device is a Roxio that came with software. I installed Pinnacle Studio and somehow the Pinnacle Razzle Dazzle drivers took over my Roxio device and it wouldn't work anymore. I installed on a second computer without Pinnacle and it worked fine, but I only used the Roxio program for capturing.
As for the quality, VHS has video noise that you may not have noticed yet. I will post before and after shots if you want to see the difference. Vegas undoubtedly has a video noise reducer, and there is a plugin from NB that also does it, but Neat Video is by far the best, IMHO.
Thank John. Indeed after discussion with MAGIX sales team that's exactly what I purchased but interestingly the link on the MAGIX website to that device (without the software) has now been removed.
Just tried to capture the video from the USB device in VP but whilst it recognised the driver it wouldn't open any dialogue "The device could not be opened". I'll pick this up again with MAGIX tomorrow.
I am nearly there, I just have to trial a few products!
I installed the Roxio software on my new Surface Pro 4, plugged in the Roxio interface, and tried to start the Roxio software. Couldn't start it. So I started Magix Video Pro X, went to the analog record, and it detected the Roxio device and I was able to record from the VHS player. This is much more convenient for me than using the bottom of the line Roxio program. I am wondering if the interfaces are simply plug and play and they find the correct drivers, and then can be used by any video program that does this type of thing. If so, then the Magix interface should work with Vegas. If not, then Magix has some work to do to make it work like the interfaces in VPX and Movie Edit Pro. Let us know how you make out with Magix.
OK John I have an update after four or 5 calls with MAGIX. Firstly the trial versions are limited to videos of 3 mins -I guess thats why they are called "trial" so no use to use in practice.
I bought Vide Easy and I think I have something to work with. Doesn't show in Vegas though so its an extra step to deal with, but manageable. It has cost more than buying RYVT and MAGIX did try to cover this with a voucher code but the code only worked if I bought the EUR version which was €50! Ho Hum.
Four or five calls with Magix? You've used up everyone's quota for the rest of the year. And some people complain about Magix support. Glad to see that you've got it sorted out. If you didn't have Vegas, I would have advised you to get Movie Edit Pro Plus or Premium instead as a minimum.
When I mentioned video noise, you may not have noticed it, but you will. My friend and neighbour just asked me to clean up several transfers from VHS that he did, to remove or reduce video noise. There is a plugin demo for Vegas if you want to try it. Take a look at the video on the site.
Thanks John. To be honest the first calls were really bad. They were just completely fobbing me off and asked me to mail them. I'd been mailingb them since last week and didn't get a reply to anything. Then (I am very persistent!) I spoke with a lovely lady who resolve everything almost straight away.
By the way there is a part on the MAGIX website which states very clearly that VP will not accep capture from USB devices. Pretty clear I guess!
