Captureing in Vegas

Timpolo wrote on 12/2/2007, 9:50 AM
Hello all,
I just purchased a capture video card for my PC. I have a 8mm camera and i transfered via the capture card using Vegas's capture program. The video captured with no problem but i have no audio. Can anyone give me some suggestions??? The video looks great once captured just having problems with the audio.

Thanks in advance!!!

Tee.

VidCap isn't great at capturing anything other than DV through firewire. Try using the software that came with the video card instead and see if that works.

Do you have the audio output from the camcorder connected to the line in jack of your sound card? In VidCap did you set the audio device to your sound card?

This raises a few other questions.

First, would the audio be transferred through the S-Video cable i have connected to the camera?

Second, it is an individual capture card i am using. I purchased it because the 8mm camera did not have a USB oe Firewire port (older camera)

Third, is there a better capture software that i am not aware of?

In VidCap my sound card was selected automatically, i thought for sure this would not be a problem and my capture of video would be seemless (so i thought).

My video card does not capture S-Video it just plays it.

Thanks again
Tee.

First: no, the audio would go through a separate cable, or at least a separate connector. One of my camcorders has only a single 1/8" jack on it for analog output, but the supplied cable has 3 plugs on the other end, red & white for right & left audio, and yellow for video. The other camcorder has separate audio and video jacks on it. A video cable will not carry audio.

Second: you'll only have USB or firewire on digital camcorders.

Third: lots of folks in this forum praise scenalyzer, but i'm not sure what it's analog capabilities are. For that matter most of the capture software that comes with consumer video cards is pretty cruddy too.

As has been mentioned often, using a video card with video input is a suboptimal solution. You'll get much better results with something like the Canopus ADVC 110 or 300. These external boxes have analog connectors and a firewire port. They'll digitize the analog signals from the camcorder or VCR and then let you capture the result as if it was coming from a digital camcorder. They are, however, substantially more expensive than a consumer video card.

Sometimes the most obvious gets overlooked.

Is audio even reaching the PC, Is the right device ( audio card maybe ) set up to record audio, and are the inputs properly selected and set ?

Thank you very much for the help. I did find an AV plug on the camera. It is and older analog camera and it is not mine so i was not familiar with the camera. Hopefully this will work. If it does not you will be hearing from me. Thanks again.
