You don't say which D8 camera you're using, but taking the DCR-TRV350 as an example, 320x240 is the best the camera can do.

Something seems strange here. If you're capturing through firewire then you should be getting a DV signal, which is fixed at 720x480. I don't know how you could get anything other than this.

Windows Media Player will lie to you about the resolution. To verify the resolution, RIGHT click on the actual AVI file. Look at PROPERTIES>DETAILS. This will list the correct resolution.

IanG,

I own a TRV-350 and it captures at DV-AVI quality (720x480) using the tape as the media. Are you sure your not talking about the mpeg mode where you use a memory stick to save your movies ???

Pete - I'm sure I'm getting confused somewhere, but the only figures I've seen say it's the lower resolution.

Can we check the most obvious thing first?

When you start a new project, a window opens that lets you set the specs for your project. Make sure that it's set at DV-AVI.

What you capture, then, should capture at 720x480.

Ian,
I'll check out my manual and see what specs they list.

Anyway I hope you have a great holiday, and thank you for all the informative posts !

Thanks for all the feedback. It seems that I was capturing at 720x480 all along. Somewhere along the way I saw a screen that said maximum quality was set at 320x240@30fps- it think it was in the capture footage tab and I got confused.
