Capturing digital 8

Smiler600 wrote on 8/28/2003, 10:44 AM
Hi people, I have strange problem when i capture digital 8 video footage using Vegas 4. When i go to render i find the finished file particularly when there is any movement i get a indistinct double image. This makes everything blury. It's even more strange the fact that i have a mini dv camera which captures perfectly. My Mini dv cam is sony vx1000 and my digital 8 is a sony dcr trv120e . Of course it will capture fine in analogue but that's not what i bought it for. Also i have recently updated the vegas 4 software but it made no difference. Please can any one help?

Could it be interlace lines you're seeing? Or, could it be sending out the field order backwards?

Smiler,

Are you watching interlaced DV on a PC? If so, you will most likely see artifacts, particularly during high motion scenes. Have you tried watching this same footage on a TV or video monitor?

Erk,
I have had it on various interlaced types on the properties box for the project when i have rendered analogue footage but i usually turn it off when i render digital footage but i'm not so sure i have for when i have being using digital 8 footage. Yes i have tried looking on a tv and it does look just as bad. I will try changing the interace properties though for when i render digital 8 footage and see if that does anything. Thanks

I just did a project the footage was on a trv 130e

I didnt change anythging in any of the templates/properties. I just left it all alone.

Captured using the same PAL properties i use to capture miniDV and rendered using the same PAL properties i use to render any PAL DVD mpgs i makes.

FYI the field order should be lower in all cases.

I do almost only D8 and don't hav any problems unique to the format, in fact what's on the tape is exactly the same as DV.
Don't fiddle with any of the VV defaults, I made that mistake and wasted a lot of time intialy.

What I have had happen is getting artifacts from things light fluro lighting, particularly with fast motion. It's probably more annoying to someone editing than watching because you're always on the lookout for every little defect.

Before you contemplate trying to fix something make really certain it's broken. PTT and play from that back to a TV, it's amazing what disappears.

Ummm i dont know about you, but the comparrison between the footage quality from my JVC miniDV and the Sony trv130e D8 was vastly different.

the sony stuff seems no where near as nice as the miniDV footage - is this a difference in the cams or the format?

There is no difference in the format, apart from the physical size of the tape.
Unfortunately though you may find a difference in the quality of the CCDs and lenses. Encoders would also be different between Sony and JVC, also encoders maybe different between what Sony are using in D8 and miniDV.

I personally love D8, just can't hack those twitchy little miniDV tapes but I guess I'm goign to have to get used to them, no one will ever built a 3 CCD D8 camera and D8 will probably be left to die a slow death. Tapes used to be cheaper per minute with D8 but not any more.

Twitchy little tapes? Hehehe you sound heaps old, like some one who complained that the wireless was fine, who needs a one of those TV gizmos.

:)

Just a little over the half century so be careful with the use of "old", "experienced" or "well travelled" would be better :)

I don't really have that much of an issue with them, the hands don't shake that much (yet), I just worry about important stuff on something that fragile and I've seen a lot of people come to grief with them. The larger format cassettes are better but then you need a far too big a camera to take it.

So IMHO D8 is just the right size for a camera. If you really want to start me having a winge lets talk about microMV!

Hi everybody,
still getting the same things, tried putting it on project settings as hi definition. Looks a bit better bu t i suppose thats' because the pixels are being made smaller! It's not what i really want for pal tv in Britain!
