Capturing DV

I have just recently capturing video from my Mini-DV camcorder (JVC GR-DV500). I am running Movie Studio 3.0a and Windows 98SE. Capture is being done via firewire.

Since I am running Windows 98SE, the captured video was split into around 4 separate files automatically by MS. During one capture session, the first video file was completely corrupted and the resulting image was square instead of a 4:3 aspect ratio. The rest of the captured video files were okay. I recaptured the first portion of the video again and thngs were okay. I also had this happen a couple of times when I borrowed my friends Sony Mini-DV camcorder.

Has anyone else experienced this or is there something that I could possibly be doing wrong?

Hope this makes sense and thanks in advance...
Al

Sometimes if you start the capture on a glitch or a blank section of the tape the capture will be garbled. Since we all remember to record a few extra seconds before the scene starts (right? ;) ) you can make sure the tape is playing correctly for a second or two before you start the capture process.

"cough... cough..." uhmmm, stutter stutter.. Right!! Of course we all start recording before and after the shot we want. Yeah, that's the ticket. Why I even leave 10 seconds... no, minutes before and after my shots. ;-)

Seriously though Chienworks, thanks for the info. That is something that I never even thought about, but I will definitely keep that in mind whenever I record or capture. Most of my stuff is just hobby and around the home, but I am going to be recording a friends daughters wedding next June and I need to get a lot of practice in before hand.

Thanks again...
