There can be no difference in quality no matter what you do. It is simply a file transfer. As long as you don't get a glitch (where the file transfer is screwed up), the quality is the same as the original video on your tape. That is the beauty of digital video.

Are you capturing in HDV mode, DV mode or downsampled (in-camera HDV to DV) DV mode?

You'd probably get a better result shooting in HDV and capturing as HDV, especially if you're in NTSC land.

I would state that much stronger. You will absolutely, positively get much better results if you shoot HDV even if you capture DV. Your clients will clearly see the difference. There is no reason to shoot DV with the Z1 unless you are a hired camera and need to turn over a miniDV tape of DV or DVCAM at the end of the day. Otherwise always shoot HDV even if you only plan to capture DV. The quality will be noticeably better.
