Capturing from Firewire

I was wondering if you have to go through the whole video in real time to capture from a Sony Digital8 Camcorder via. the Firewire (iLink) port?

I don't think you have to but I'm not sure... can't you just grab the video/audio directly from the camera via the Firewire or do I have to sit through the whole video?

Thanks,
-Kevin

Hi Kevin,
I have a Sony Digital8 also, and with my Maxtor Firewire card and Vegas Video's capture program I can very easily scan through to the footage I want and capture at will. You then take these saved DV clips onto the VV timeline via the programs explorer view and/or media pool to create your masterpiece :)

OK, but if you want to capture that part do you have to wait until it goes through the whole thing in real time?

Like, if I had a 20 minute clip I wanted, would I have to wait for that 20 minutes until it captured or can Firewire just transfer that in a minute or two?

Not sure if I explained that right... hmm.

The cameras transfer the video in RT, not faster.

It's possible that in a future version we support > 1x capture.

You could also use Advanced Capture to perform automated batch (re)capturing of clips of your choosing.

Thanks!

Songmeanings:
If the footage you are capturing is Digital 8 with time code, you can use the advanced caputure to key in start and stop times.

Whether Digi8 or analog, you can start capture, allow it to proceed in real time until you reach your out-point, then, manually stop the capture. Anything captured to that point will be part of the new clip.

Now, then, Deef, to your comment about >x1 capture speeds, obviously, for you to have made that comment, wheels are turning somewhere within that Wisconsin 'forge'. My mind is wonderin' loudly how greater than real time capture might be accomplished given our current state of camcorder hardware.

Please let me know about any betas. I'm sitting through the capture of a two-hour, three-cam shoot as I type this. Would love to shorten the time.

Interesting post, thanks 'Song'.
