capturing from VCR

I am trying to capture from a VCR by doing a pass-through with my Sony TRV-18. But I'm running into the following problem. Until I plug the firewire cable into the cam, it acts as a monitor for the VCR. But as soon as I plug in the firewire, it stops showing what's playing on the VCR, and there is therefore nothing to capture.
Any ideas?

There's probably a menu item you need to change about firewire in/out.
