Capturing HDV

KSTONER wrote on 12/16/2009, 8:43 PM
Hello all, I previously posted a topic about what a good prosumer camera would be....I chose the Sony HDR-FX7, and I love it!
Only problem I'm having is capturing the footage.l I thought it would be just as easy (heh) as capturing DV footage, but to no avail. So, my question is, what's a good way to capture HDV footage on Vegas? Is there is a better software and or hardware? Do I have to convert the .m2t files before using them in Vegas?
Once again, any help is greatly appreciated. You guys are great!

Vegas can handle m2t files on the timeline, but you need some good horsepower in the processor. Otherwise, look at "gearshift" from Vasst.com to proxy the file for editing. I use "hdvsplit" to capture hdv from my Sony Z1 cameras.

Ahh...Okay. My current processor is a AMD Phenom(tm) 9500 Quad-Core Processor 2.20 GHz. Is that a good one?
Also, does HDV Split work with 64-bit vista?

HDV split does work with Vista X64. Be warned that it is only beta software (hasn't been updated in years), and I have found that if you have the preview windows open, it will crash (but continue to capture).

Also, it doesn't like gaps of greater than 4seconds between clips.

That said, it's a great little app, and meets most of my capturing needs (especially it's ability to give clips custom names).

Interesting question. I've been capturing HDV footage from my XH A1 without a hitch in Vegas 8 and Pro 9 for some time now.

Oh? What are your settings good sir ;)?
I'd rather not have to get new software for HDV.

you need to tell vegas to capture HDV, you can't use vidcap. Vegas's HDV capture app is built in to Vegas.

HDVSplit is free, just do a search for it. I like it better then vegas's app just because I don't need Vegas open to use it, so it's a lot faster to start capturing.

I too capture from an XH A1, no problems with XP (Vegas 8 and 9). I have hit one small snag with Windows 7 64 bit, I have to "reconnect to device" when I start the feed from the camera, but then all is well. Sony is aware of this problem and working on it. All I do is click the "capture video" button in Vegas and select HDV. Your processor should be fine for this.

@ KSTONER -
I follow the same steps daryl outlined in his post.
