When I video capture SP VHS tapes, all is well. But I have an LP VHS tape, which, when I capture it, the sound gets more and more out of sync as the capture progresses. It even displays the audio track as longer than the video track!
I've been capturing other audio/video, and all is well.
Well, my first thought is, "how totally bizarre", but i realize that's not
very helpful ;-)
What hardware/software are you using for the capture? I use an NTSC
Hauppauge WinTV and the VidCap software that came with it and have
had no problems capturing from VHS at any speed. I also have an ATI
Rage Fury PRO with video in/out, which doesn't work acceptably well with
either VidCap or SF's VideoCapture. When i use ATI's capture software
i'll get an audio track that is usually 10% to 50% longer than the video
track, and the video track often runs at the wrong speed or has gaps in
it.
Have you tried using a different VCR? Most home VCRs are optimized
for SP and SLP (or EP) playback, but LP is usually not handled very well
at all. Your capture system may not be seeing enough video signal to
know what to do with it.
Here's an experiment to try: dub your LP tape over to another tape but
record at SP, then try capturing from the new SP tape. I wouldn't
suggest this as the solution though because the extra dubbing step will
probably make your video look pretty bad.
We constantly hear about ATI problems on this forum and in tech support emails and it is very difficult to troubleshoot these (problems involve drivers, codecs, MPEG used as a source, device control, video display drivers and more). This is not to say VF or any of our apps are perfect by a long shot, but I will reiterate my own opinion (this is not an official SF statement):
For best results, stick with the DV format, and use OHCI compatible IEEE-1394DV cards such as the Pyro or SIIG DV cards. Use the native Windows drivers and nothing else. If you need to input/output analog source material and you do not have a DV camera, consider the Sony DVMC DA2 Media converter or the similar box available from powerrcom. You will not be dissapointed!
