Capturing Video from XL1

I am capturing video from my Canon XL1. I have captured video previously with a Sony Handycam with no issues. However, when I attempt to capture (I'm using Vegas Video 4.0) a window appears and says, "Warning: An error occurred during the current operation. The application does not support this file type." When I click on "Details" it says that "Files Z749GF, FP3G3N, LHG5KK could not be opened."

I am connecting the XL1 my IBM T30 Thinkpad through a firewire that is plugged into my IEEE 1394 card (Texas Instruments OHCI compliant). I am dumping the uncompressed video into a seperate Western Digital external drive that is also attached to my notebook through the same Tex Instr firewire card.

I am able to capture the video after I get out of the warning screen. However, every few seconds (random) the preview screen goes half-mosaic and a loud white noise occurs. This happens during capture and also during playback on my computer of the captured video (the video itself is fine as I have played it on my television). Thus the captured video is unusable.

Does anyone else have this problem? I imagine that I have a faulty set-up, or possibly a crappy fire wire card?

Any help would be most appreciated!

Thanks!

Many thanks,

Andrew
