I don't know about using Sony for capturing from a cassette, but I do use RIP Vinyl which can be found at http://www.ripvinyl.com. They have a demo version available and to purchase it is only $7.00 US.

It will recognize the silent spots between songs (user configurable by the way) and break them up into individual .WAV files.

I don't believe it's possible. I use RIP Vinyl too, which works well for me. After that I use Acoustica to get rid of tape hiss and make the recording more "lively".

Yes, this can be done. Place the cursor on an empty audio track and click the round button in the track header. This will arm the track for recording and start the recording process. The volume is controlled by the sound card's mixer control panel. When you are done click the stop button. A dialog box will pop up letting you name and save the file.
