CD-Text Confusion

HogTime wrote on 4/24/2010, 10:42 AM
I had my audio CD mastered by a pro, with CD-Text and ISRC codes. When I got it back, I scanned it with Sony CDA 5.2d (Disc - Read Subcodes - Full Scan). The text and ISRC codes were there. Commercial audio CDs also show text and ISRC codes with this scan.

I then had CD-R copies made by the Kunaki online service. You run their software on your PC and it reads the contents of the CD and uploads it to their facility. When I did the same CDA scan on the copies, the text and ISRC codes weren't there.

After doing some research, I found an add-on for Windows Media Player that displays text. My Kunaki copies do show text in WMP.

From online reading, it appears there are 2 methods of storing text on an audio CD:
- 5K byte "lead-in" area
- 31 MB other area

Kunaki says they support the "lead-in" style of text, but not "the Sony standard" (and not ISRC codes).

It appears to me that CDA is looking at the "other" area and not the lead-in area for text. WMP must be looking at the lead-in area.

Can anybody shed any light on this? At least it looks like there is still text on my copies that will display in players.

Thanks,
Ralph

What WMP usually displays is not CD-TEXT but CDDB info.

In my case, I'm pretty sure it was from the CD. WMP didn't display anything until I installed the "text add on". Also, my original songs CD is not in the database yet.

Thanks for the input, though.

Hi Ralph,

I got a request from a studio owner who has me master some of his projects to include ISRC codes when creating a master for replication. I've never done this and see your post is the only one that mentions this. When I receive his master, does the client supply me with the code to type into CDA? Thanks for any help. Bob K.

Yes; there will be a series, one for each Track.
