CDA 5.2 won't write to disc

I'm running version 5.2b (build 197). Operating System is : Windows XP Pro, version 2002. Service Pack 3.
When I select Burn CD the scanning for CD devices comes up and my computer locks up ?

Any ideas ?

What type of CD-R and what connection (SATA,/USB/ DE m or s, other drive on cable or not ). I had something similar once that turned out to be a kink in an 80-wire IDE cable - presumably some critical timing issue...
