Cell phone videos do not show an "image" thumbnail in Vegas 22.

Len Kaufman wrote on 9/4/2024, 5:58 PM

Hi,

I'm using Vegas 22. I have a need to utilize a number of cell phone (Samsung S23 Ultra) video clips in a project I am doing. The clips are MP4 files. But the clips in Project Media, as well as Explorer, only show with a symbol for VLC (the program I use for viewing video clips). Of course, this makes choosing the clips I'm trying to use very difficult. Is there a way to make them show up with a "proper" (image) thumbnail, so that I can identify the subject matter? I have chosen "thumbnail" where the choice was given. When I open up the folders in Adobe Explorer, I do see the images.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Len

That's because you have VLC as your main default media player. Only way to avoid that is to uninstall it or try using a better media player. I threw VLC in the bin many years ago. Media player Classic Black Edition (MPC-BE) is what i highly recommend. Give it a try and see.

@Steve_Rhoden Thank you, Steve. That worked in the project media page, but strangely, did not work in the Explorer page. Just shows a logo with MPC-BE for each file. And also, doesn't work when I just go to Windows Explorer outside of Vegas. It would really be helpful there, to determine which files to import into Vegas.

There is a limitation in Windows 10 and 11, not showing thumbnails on certain files.

I solved it by downloading and installing Sage Thumbs on my Windows machine.

@Len Kaufman Ok, well installing and configuring SageThumbs and Media Preview should have you covered. Both are what i currently use to make my thumbnail previews a breeze.

@Len Kaufman I have an S23 Ultra, maybe your files MP4 are HEVC? I use HEVC all the time & have 0 prob with thumbnails but I installed this Microsoft codec a long time ago.

Steve I installed SageThumbs and having no luck producing a thumbnail preview. I have included SageThumb setting and .mov and .mp4 is not in the setting for a preview. My .JPEG's show a preview. Also Media Preview does not download.

Any tips you may have? to show thumbnails with a preview? Thanks

@Steve_Rhoden; @Sassylola Same here. I tried Sage Thumbs, Media Preview, Icaro, Free Commander. No joy. At least the cel vids thumbs show up in project media, but sure would be nice if they showed up in explorer.

What's really weird...in this particular project, I have 213 files from the cel phone. And of those 213, 5 (yes five) show up with thumbnails. And those five were all in a short sequence of clips. Huh?!

@Steve_Rhoden; @Sassylola This was a series of things suggested to try, and of all places, it showed up on LinkedIn. Non of these worked for me, and I was reluctant to mess with the registry.

@Steve_Rhoden; @Sassylola; @Gid; @Mark-y Whew! I got it!!! Spent oh SO MUCH time on this, but I was determined. I installed K-Lite Mega Codec. At first that didn't work, but there is a little "sub program" offered, with which to tweak the installation. That gave me the opportunity to ad thumbnails for various file types. I clicked all of them. Why not?

The best place I found to download K-Lite Mega Codec was from Major Geeks. All of the others wanted to add an extension to Firefox, which I didn't want.

https://www.majorgeeks.com/

I'm sorry I can't report which boxes I checked on the initial install. I didn't record what I did.

But now, I have thumbnails on Windows Explorer and in Project files. And I'm still using VLC as my player. Happy camper here!

I had this issue with Win10. One day, no thumbnails. I tried everything I could think of, including spending HOURS on the internet trying every suggestion. Nothing worked. Some have warned against K-Lite, but I was at the end of trying everything. I downloaded the Basic one and it rebuilt all the missing thumbnails. It also comes with MPC-Classic player. I also use the MPC-BE player as my 'go to'.

@Len Kaufman, glad you figured it out. While doing research for this problem I did see that installing K Lite would work. But if anybody that has knowledge of this, I remember being warned on this forum not to install a Codec package like K Lite because it would cause conflicts with Vegas?

In Vegas 22 I have a thumbnail preview, In windows file explorer I do not see a thumbnail preview as shown above in my previous post.

I might bite the bullet and install K Lite.

@Sassylola for me it was a matter of being desperate because there's no way I can read a file name and tell you what video it is. I figured that if it was bad I would uninstall it and be in the same position I was before. But I chose the basic version and it rebuilt the thumbnails and I was quite okay. There were no adverse effects using Vegas Pro, at least for me.
