Changing from 1440x1080 to 1920x1080

I'm in the middle of several projects and just realized that I had the pixel/aspect ratio set to HDV 1440 x 1080. These projects are going on youtube and vimeo and the pixel/aspect ratio needs to be 1920 x 1080 - unless I want youtube and vimeo to convert it on the fly - and I don't.

Most of these projects are still images - some animation. The raw video was taken using 16:9 format ratio so that's OK.

What's going to happen if I change these projects over 1920x1080 - with half of it already being done...

Nothing much, it might playback better and that's about it.

How do you know if anything will get a border due to changing the ratio. What about new media files - as the preview screen seems to be 16:9 - is whatever I'm looking on the preview screen, what I should see? What would the effect had been if it had output 1440x1080? Would the screen have borders? Would it be stretched?

Would the screen have borders? Would it be stretched? Why don't you just try changing it? If you are worried about going back to what you have now, first save the project (VEG file) under a new name. Then, change the project properties from 1440x1080 PAR 1.333 to 1920x1080 PAR 1.000. Use one of the presets to do this so you get it exactly right.

Other people have already answered all of your questions, and I will repeat: you shouldn't see ANY difference whatsoever, and your project will render the same. The ratio of height to width is exactly the same because 1440 times the PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) of 1.333 equals 1920 exactly. Thus, the two have precisely the same height to width ratio.

The only difference you will see -- as Bob already pointed out -- is that if most of your source footage is 1920x1080, the project should now preview much more smoothly.

So, at the risk of sounding like a Nike commercial: Just do it!

We do this often to prepare HDV for web delivery including YT and Vimeo. Set your render to 1920x1080 at 1.0 PAR. It's demonstrated in our tutorial.

If your footage is 1440x1080, leave the project that setting and render to 1920x1080. If the footage is 1920x1080 then change your project.

The only issue you'll have is that all generated media will be the old project settings. IE resolution, interlace settings, etc. You should change that to to give it the higher resolution (I don't think online 1080 is really 1080 myself, doesn't look as good as something I'd render).
