Cheap, But Good Mic

My late Dad always taught me to buy the best you can afford. That advice has always served me well.

Several times each year, I have the opportunity to record large choral groups and orchestras. For this, I have a stable of good to great quality mics to choose from.

Being the mic slut that I am, I ordered 2 MCA SP1 condenser mics ($39 each) to have as extras. I really did not expect the sound quality to be there, but I took the chance and was pleasantly surprised. Now mind you, you still get what you pay for. These mics are a little harsh on the top end and not as smooth on the bottom as more expensive instruments, but by and large, they're not bad..and they look good. Anyone on a small budget may find them useful for voiceovers, instruments, etc. A little EQ in the right places and you can have yourself a nice sound and look professional while you're doing it. A stereo pair in front of a musical performance may be just the thing to make a good video great. (Note: they will require phantom power.)

Nothing replaces quality equipment and quality usually costs more. I just want to pass along my experience with this economical mic.
