Cheapest way to transcode Prores Raw for use in VP17/VP18?

Teagan wrote on 3/15/2021, 2:37 PM

Hey, looks like a Panasonic S5 is in my future with an atomos ninja V and I'm wondering if I could use the 5.9k prores raw files in Vegas somehow or if I'd be better off using 4K VLog/VGamut at 10 bit 4:2:2? I'd rather not buy another program like assimilate scratch as that is sort-of expensive in the long term.

The VEGAS team is working on adding new format support for future versions of VEGAS, so it may work out for the short term that is is best to shoot VLOG 10bit 4:2:2, or better yet record to ProRes, which decodes wonderfully in VEGAS Pro with the new update (still using the VLOG profile in the camera) to the atomos recorder, and then when VEGAS is updated to include ProRes RAW support, you can make the switch then.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

I don't know of anything cheap you can buy, there was/is a couple of assimilate products that cost $20 a month but you'd be better off getting premiere pro that comes with adobe media encoder for the same price. It's still expensive if you have no other use for it

prores now performs better than AVC (4K 422/10bit) as it should, using about 40% less cpu, no lagging at edit points or transitions, and with the AVC Vegas appears to be using 20% less CPU but not seeing any advantage to lower cpu, still lags at edit points, and transitions. Real efficiency improvements though

RAW support likely isn't too far off as well, considering how long they've been working at getting it ready. We are nearing the time of year where you start hearing about a new version (within the next few months), so maybe that's something folks may be able to look forward to, or if not at launch, maybe shortly after. I know the team has been working hard on knocking out some of the most requested features.

It is true we are working on ProRes RAW support in VEGAS Pro. We have not set a release target or date for this yet, but it is in progress right now.

@VEGASDerek Hi Derek, Is there anything on the horizon for Canon Raw? The Prores is a very welcome addition, thanks.

In terms of RAW, right now we are prioritizing ProRes and BlackMagic. We have some other updates we need to get done for XAVC and Red support as well. Canon Raw is lower on our priority list at the moment.

Delighted to hear Red support will be updated, AFAIK Vegas back in the Sony days was among the first NLE's to support Red.

wish we could get HEVC work properly before going Prores or other Raw.. tried to make HEVC 10-Bit 422 play today; had to use Otter to input convert to Prores 444 only to learn playback performance is poor also.

To my knowledge HEVC 4:2:2 is not in the HEVC 1.0 spec - it maxes up to 4:2:0. It's a proprietary tweak of the codec by Canon, I believe.

However I have seen that a newer version of HEVC on wikipedia supports 4:2:2. They may have to update the codec in vegas to support that 2.0 spec

VEGASDerek wrote on 3/17/2021, 8:40 AM

We have updates to our HEVC support, specifically for 4:2:2, but we were not able to get them completed in time for this update. Hopefully we will have some improvements available for the next update.
