Chienworks: Are you out of room on your video clip site?

riredale wrote on 4/8/2004, 6:46 PM
The reason for my question is that I just uploaded two short and one longish clip this afternoon, and they haven't appeared (yet).

Of course, I am grateful that you even provide this kind of service. Just out of curiosity, how much space do you use, and what does a host charge to keep a site like this going?

Richard, i'm here, have no fear. My wife claimed me for the evening so i hadn't gotten around to checking the uploads yet. :)

I've got my own web server here in my house. I've got a 40GB drive dedicated to the vegasusers.com uploaded files, so there is way more than plenty of space letf. I would imagine that if i had this site hosted on a commercial server the costs would be staggering. I could imagine this site bankrupting a small company. Fortunately i'm hosting it on my commercial-grade cable connection at home so it's not too bad. The trade off is that my outgoing pipe isn't very fast so downloads are a little slow and have to be limited. Oh well, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

Hmmm...

And I had thought you had to have hundreds of gigabytes, located at some server farm. Amazing.

Once again, thanks for the use of your disk space and bandwidth.

Riredale,
I downloaded another of your clips. Understand that this is personal taste and not a critism, but I didn't like the split screen approach. The resolution of 710x 480 is bad enough without subdividing into 300 x200 or so subimages. I would prefer one camera at a time fading between them to give the overall. I really did like the entrance video though, it was very impressive.
