Choppy Video

Kcharles wrote on 8/22/2010, 1:11 PM
I own a Toshiba Laptop which is a 64 bit, Windows Vista, system. I am using Vegas Movie Studio 9, and my camera is a Canon HV20. I have recently uploaded several clips to my project, and now my video is choppy in preview. Why would i be getting choppy video? These clips uploaded without incident or chop.

Can I ignore the choppy video, and countinue to edit? Once I'm ready to transfer to DVD will the video still be choppy? Does my system need an upgrade?

What am I to do?

If you have added effects or pan/crop to your timeline, preview performance is affected.

Likewise, if you have not set your Project Properties to "Match Media Settings," preview performance is affected.

Any running applications on your computer will affect preview performance.

You can turn off "Simulate Device Aspect" and "Scale to Fit Preview" in your Preview settings to further enhance preview performance.

There is no reason HDV should not preview smoothly on a reasonably fast laptop (you didn't say), assuming the above steps have been taken.

Thnx for responding!

I have added video effects. Color Correction that is it. When I goto project properties an press "Match Media Settings" an explorer window comes up. I did take off "scale to fit preview" and "simulate device aspect" and the video us still choppy.

Exactly. Then in Explorer, you select the video file you are working with, then click "Apply" and "OK." This is covered in the Help and Tutorials.

"I have added video effects."

Then you may not get smooth preview without doing a Prerender to RAM or Disc. That is why these features are provided in Vegas.

You still haven't posted your system specs.

Read "Optimize Vegas for speedy video preview" here http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2008/12/19/sony-vegas-hints-and-tips/

But if you have added plugins, don't expect miracles. You always add the plugins at the very end, so you can watch the video in real time while cutting it.

On my dual core Vaio notebook, it is possible to get full preview rate at Preview->Auto at 640x360, using HDV source and the CC plugin.

At 960x540 the preview rate drops to 24-25 fps.

YMMV. Again, use the Prerender tool to preview your video at full frame rate with effects. Your CPU simply cannot keep up with the demands of realtime full frame preview of effects or pan/crop.

It's normal when you add effects to your work. Luckily you didn't upgrade to VMS10 because no matter what you do, it's gonna be choppy on this newer version.
