Chroma Blur - not just for keying

Well, I just was putting some footage together for a demo reel, and I saw some footage for the Fire Dept. I had shot here locally that had really bad stepping on the edges of a red fire extinguisher. I looked thinking it might be stretching or something on the footage, but it was just the 1:1 of the 4:1:1 causing me to see that the red was sampled so lowly that it was stepping. I thought hey, why don't I try a chroma blur to see if that clears it up w/o causing any problems with the footage itself (this won't help if you're outputing to DV or printing it back to tape as it will have to be 4:1:1 again) I tried it and presto, image looked nicer ( no stepping ) and didn't seem to lose any clarity.

Others out there may have already known this ( and I probably did though I hadn't put 2 and 2 together until just now ) so here's hoping I can help some of you add a little faster than I did :)

Dave
