Chroma Key

I understand the basic principles about chroma key. What I'd like is a step by step tutor for using the VV3 chroma function.

You see, I moved away from Ulead Studio 5.0 to MGI VideoWave 4.0 because it had chroma key functions. I was not wholly satisfied with its performance. So I purchased VV3 due to being advised the chroma key abilities were superior to MGI (Now Roxio).

After experimenting with it, I am not able to isolate the foreground so I can place a background static graphic behind the subject. Instead the chroma key mangles the subject as well as convert the color selected. Currently, I am looking for new background material and perhaps some lighting
equipment to se if that alleviates the situation. But I suspect I must be doing some thing wrong with the software. Neither the manual nor the Windows
help files tell you much.

Sorry if these are obvious questions but:

Is you background a solid, even color?
Are you using the eye dropper tool to select the color to be removed?
Does the foreground subject have any of the same color as the background? (ie..blue background, guy wearing blue shirt.)
