Chroma Keyer changed?

dtudela wrote on 11/3/2006, 5:57 AM
I just noticed that when I opened a Vegas 5 project in Vegas 7 that I had a situation with the Chroma Keyer Fx that had been applied to a still image (PNG). Here's the history: This is a photoshop image of a "board" on a blue background save as a PNG file. This image was placed on the first video track overlaying video on the second track. I then used the Chroma Keyer to get rid of the blue background. The board was then used for a background of a title. I have been working on this project for over a year now and had no issues with this setup. Now what I see both in the V5 and V7 project is the blue background is back but seems to be about half opacity--sort of like a light blue SCREEN background. When I look at the properties of this image under PROPERTIES/MEDIA /Aplha Channel it says "None". On the other hand if I use this same image in "Screenblast NLE" the Chroma Keyer works fine. I might add that in V5 & V7 the Chroma Keyer works fine when used in other areas such as video but not on the still images I tested. I noticed this issue only after installing V7, however, I am not suggesting that is the cause of the problem since it has been awhile since I have worked on this project in V5. Sorry for the long post--I was hoping to anticipate and answer any questions you might have. Thanks in advance for your help.

Did you try changing the NONE to one of the other options?

Thanks Dave for the quick reply. Yes, I did try the other other options and I should have mentioned that also. For example, when I create a title with "BluffTitler" I always have to change the alpha channel option to Premultiplied (dirty) to get it to work--not that I understand it. I'm sure that I can work through this but was hoping to save myself a lot of time by asking here first.

After re-reading your original post, the Alpha Channel would not do anything because you are doing a chroma-key which does not use the alpha channel from the original video. It creates one.

It sounds like you need to resample the Blue area to adjust the chromakey.

I guess my in-experience is evident here, but I'd don't understand what you mean or how to resample?

In the chroma keyer fx window, you have a colour picker to set the colour you are keying out. Use that to sample the shade of blue in your board background.

Thanks to all for your comments. Update: Even though the Chroma Keyer does not appear to be working, i.e., the background color (blue in this case) does not disappear from the preview window or the external monitor yet it renders out O.K. Also, if I change the preview window to "select right half or left half" the blue goes away in the half that show the results of the FX applied. It seems odd that it happened in Vegas 5 as well as Vegas 7 at the same time. As i stated earlier it was working fine for awhile. I will restart Vegas with defaults as soon as I get home tonight and see if that helps. All in all I love working with Vegas.

Even though the Chroma Keyer does not appear to be working

In that case, click on the "Split Screen" button just above the preview screen. I'll bet all starts working again.

Thanks jetdv--the fix was as simple as clicking the "Split Screen" button.

Why when I apply chroma key to an image or clip it only gets applied to half of the image? - Please see image.

Fairly much the same solution as provided earlier by jetdv:

click on the "Split Screen" button just above the preview screen. I'll bet all starts working again.

The FX bypass button is probably activated to give you that result on the preview screen. In the FX bypass options, you can select L half, R half, or full screen when the Bypass button is activated.
