Cleaning the DVD Recorder/Player on the PC

Any recommendations about whether you should and, if so how, you should clean the playing/recoding equipment in the PC tray? Are the cleaning discs that can be bought for use in a DVD player sufficient or should we use something else because of the recording function? Any suggestions about the method and make of any recommended cleaners would be welcome.

Can't think this hasn't come up before but "Search" hasn't revealed anything so thought I would ask now.

I would have little faith in these co-called "cleaning" discs since there is no physical contact between the eye and the disc. I did hear some rubbish about the electrostatic action of the disc magically sucking up the dust.... but if you want to believe that BS....

I suppose that if you operate in an extremely dusty environment then it might be worth picking up one of those puffer lens cleaners, opening the player up and giving it a slight brush, but then in the other hand.... if it ain't broke then don't fix it.

No problems on the PC Grazie. I've had to clean my domestic DVD player and used a disc cleaner recommended by Maplin and this made me wonder about cleaning the PC which probably gets far more use.

A puff of air to blow the dust off the emitter, that's all any of them need.
The optical drives are so cheap to replace every few years, I wouldn't spend anything on cleaning stuff.

I probably would clean it only after a problem arose (the drive doesn't read a disc as fast or not at all).

Cleaning it should probably be done by disassembling the drive and carefully cleaning the parts, but you can try blowing compressed air from a can into the drive with the drawer open. Make sure it isn't spraying water. Test it with a CD or DVD.

In terms of the discs themselves, I have cleaned lots of them. I take it to the sink and use mild dish detergent and warm water. Then I grab it by the edges and shake it vigorously to remove the excess water. Finally, I blot it on a SOFT paper towel if you can find them anymore. Bounty USED to be soft.
