clip audio waveform display problem

This is puzzling me: on the timeline I have quite a number of clips and other audio effects and these are all playing as required. Some clips I've deleted the audio because its not wanted. I've just added a clip that has dialogue (which plays at correct level) but the audio display is flat lined; I don't know of any control for doing that (apart from "rubber-banding"). I added an earlier clip with dialogue and that audio displays as expected (similar level on audio meters), so it appears not to be something I've done on that audio track.
I've swapped the clip onto an adjacent timeline and still the same result (plays but is flatlined).
This is Vegas 6b. What have I missed (or messed)? This is HDV.

edit: for a test I extracted the same clip from the bulk captured file and this audio shows normally in the trimmer and when inserted on the timeline (adjacent to the clip mentioned above).

---- anybody got a solution? Not that this is a show stopper (in this instance) but it would be nice to understand what causes the problem.

Just raising this again in case any of you guys know the solution.

Let's see if we can reduce the problem to its basics.
You have an audio clip on the timeline that plasy as expected however the waveform shows as a flatline?

1) Does the audio level meter read as expected?
2) Have you turned on the option that says "Show waveforms for visible clips only"?

I'm thinking that just maybe Vegas thinks the clip isn't visible and therefore isn't showing it. Also if you're only creating 8 bit waveform files and the clip is very soft you mightn't see anything although you did say it looks OK elsewhere.
Bob.

Bob, I'll check those things a bit later. Just rendering the project and it's got about 3 hours before the machine will be free. I think I checked the "visible clips" thing, but after my kerfuffle with the "quantize frames" I'd better wait to make sure.

Bob, OK, checked those pointers.
The audio level meter does read as expected; the clip is of a boat crossing the finishing line and the acknowledgement signal is loud and clear (about 0dB); that's what attracted my attention to the "flatline".
Have not selected "build waveforms only for visible clips", nor 8-bit peaking envelopes.
If the clip on the timeline is opened in the trimmer, the audio looks the same (ie flat). Same if clip selected from "project media", which suggests something done when cutting the clip from the bulk material; this was done by a sequential manual method so I can't imagine why only this clip would be affected.
Maybe it will never happen again!
