hello

I have captured 50 hrs of mini dv and then i rendered them into avi format. I have about 500 gigs of clips from the capture process. Can i delete them?

if i need a part can't i just load the avi file and cut out the part i need?

and i'm transferring the avi files to dvd and i'm getting bars on the sides of each movie. how do i get rid of them?

I have movie studio platinum 8.0
thanks

luke

When you say you've captured and rendered, do you mean you captured the video and then saved them as another file format? Or do you just have the DV-AVIs from your video captures?

After you've edited your video and output your final, you can certainly remove the original captured video from your hard drive.

If you're seeing bars on the sides of your DVDs, it means that your project settings don't match your source footage. Are you original DV-AVIs 4:3 or 16:9? Have you ensured that your project is set up for DV-AVIs that match those specs?

If so, and you have selected the option to Stretch Video To Fill, you should not get black space on the sides of your video outputs. Have you checked this option?

1) i captured from my camcorder avi clips from the mini dv disks

2) I put all of them on the timeline and saved the file as a vf file

3) when i render, I rendered all the clips together into 1 movie (about 13 gigs) as 1 avi file.

for the black bars:

4) when i render it is set as ntsc dv widescreen, stretched video to fill. I can't find where i choose 16:9 or 4:3 but i think earlier in the process i picked 16:9. I'm using dvd architect to make my dvd's.

thanks- I hope i answered your ?'s

You captured from miniDV disks?

MiniDV is a tape-based system.

If you are talking about miniDVD disks, then what device did you use to capture your video? It's possible it didn't create true DV-AVIs.And that could be contributing to your problems.

I'm confused by comment "I can't find where i choose 16:9 or 4:3 but i think earlier in the process i picked 16:9. I'm using dvd architect to make my dvd's." Did you not check your Project Properties (by clicking the Properties button on the Preview window)?

yes, i captured from mini dv tapes.

i captured by playing the mini dv through the camcorder and capturing with sony vegas and a firewire connection

I checked sony dvd architect 4.5 and it is set at 16:9 ratio in the preferences.

thanks steve!!

So the question now is, is your camera widescreen or normal? If it's normal then you shouldn't be using the widescreen template.

thanks for the tip...i checked my camcorder and for the past 6 years it has been in 4:3 mode.

can the video i captured be changed to 16:9? if so, how?

also, is it okay to delete those clips captured using sony vegas? (now that they are converted into 1 hour long avi files)

thanks

It's already been converted to widescreen 16:9 by having the black bars added on the sides.

If you don't like the black bars you could use Pan/Crop to "match output aspect" and lose some of the top and bottom. You could use an intermediate setting that crops less and shows narrower bars.

You could stretch the video out side to side to fill the screen and make everyone short'n'fat.

You could leave it exactly the way it is and find some complimentary video or images to put on a lower track to fill in the black side bar areas with something more interesting.

But, if your source is entirely 4:3, why not make the whole project 4:3?

-------------------------------

Assuming you rendered the whole captured batch to a DV .avi file (instead of any of the myriad other AVI formats), sure, go ahead and delete the original captured files. Or, save those captured files and delete the 1-hour composite file you created. Either way is basically the same result.
