"How can I keep clips I import from automatically being placed on the time line?"

I used to. Now I can't even double click to check it out - ugh...

"And is there any way to mark clips in the bin that I have already used so I don't use them twice?"

Well, there's no actual BRAKE on you doing that, but there is the COUNT option Column in Project Media for you to keep track on the amount of times you've used Media.

No they don't.

If I use import > media they go into project media window. They aren't placed on the timeline until I do it manually.

deusx : "No they don't.

Then, deusx, what is this OPTION in Preferences? It's suggesting I can choose to load - double click - Trimmer or Timeline (tracks)?

I suppose we need to know just HOW our friend here is getting Media into Vegas.

Also I can just Drag Media from M$ Folder straight into the Project Media Pane without getting the same onto the Timeline

Grazie
