Closed Captioning Question

dbrockma wrote on 4/21/2016, 11:02 PM
I have searched the forums and read the one thread I found. I also read the excellent tutorial at http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/add_closed_captions_to_your_video_project.

My project is a 2.3 minute promo and I want a simple closed caption for the entire 2.3 minutes that says 'music playing'
I have tried both importing and adding a marker by hand, and the timeline shows it. When I enable CC1 in the preview window it shows up correctly.

When I 'render as' the Metadata options to 'save project markers in rendered media file' is GRAYED OUT. For every type of output format I have tried, and I tried most of them, including the ones listed in the tutorial.

I searched the web extensively and no luck. What I really want is a template or the EXACT settings to embed the CC into the resulting file.

I have been a Vegas user since version 4, and usually I can figure out whatever I want to do by searching and trying the settings.

At this point I will use any output format that works. What I need is the closed captioning embedded into an H.264. I do not want to send a cc file with the video, as an aside the client specifically asked to ONLY have the CC embedded into the H.264 file.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a very good video on youtube, search for vegas closed caption. it's a two part video. When you find the one with the talking giraffe, that's the one.
I don't think vegas will encode cc into mp4. MXF works great. If you render to mp4 vegas will create an scc. file for the video, but it wont be embedded.

I second that - the two part video on You Tube with the talking giraffe was a huge help to me when I was figuring out how to cc my videos for the first time. I also have a feeling you will find it doesn't work out when you try to render to mp4. But, if you are trying to create something to upload to say, You Tube, there are work arounds - including selecting a different file format that supports cc embedding and then uploading that file... I think I used a Windows MOV once? It has been a while...

The giraffe videos were very interesting. I can export subtitle files all day long, but I still can't get them to embed in a MP4 file. H.264 is a subpart of the MP4 standard so theoretically if it can do one it can do the other.

Has anyone successfully embedded closed captions in a H.264 file? That should have been my first question and depending on the answer I will open a tech support case.

The Vegas interface is very different in 10a versus 13 what I am using also.

I downloaded a trial of Movie Captioner that was painless.
