codec problem with vegas

arne wrote on 6/6/2003, 7:41 AM
Hi!

I'm unable to view anything from the timeline in the video preview window in Vegas. I think it is because I have other codecs in conflict with some installed by Vegas.

Does anyone know what codec Vegas uses to preview the timeline (in the video preview window). Knowing this I might be able to figure out where the conflict is.

Thank you.

Hi arne,

Do you have the 'Split Screen View' turned on? It's the button that looks like a grey circle in a square just above the preview window. If you have then you've probably set it to display the image in the clipboard. If you turn this button off you should see the image of the timeline

Cheers,

If Scott's post doesn't do the trick...

The whole thing gets kind of complex, as I've probably overdone it posting in the past regarding this stuff...

Vegas normally uses it's own codec for DV, the Mainconcept plugin for mpg1/2, and whatever else you've got installed related to mjpeg etc... Quicktime requires the full install of the separate player normally.

You might have something incompatible with Vegas, and need to change the file &/or it's header info, or need to tell Vegas in the registry how to handle it.

If you're lucky, you're just using HUFFYUV, which requires setting the codec to force RGB. Or alternatively, you're using DiVX and just need to update your DiVX install. You might also get away with setting the codec properties in other cases - an interlaced picvid avi from V/Dub can do strange things in Vegas depending on your field setting for/in picvideo properties.

In extreme cases I've seen, where there is a conflict, just have to muddle thru renaming or unregistering codec files, usually stuff with the .ax extension. Ligos mpg1/2 files can conflict badly with the mainconcept codec in/with Vegas, and different mainconcept versions (from different apps) can conflict. Vegas is usually pretty good about this though, and a conflict causes the file not to play outside of Vegas, not in it.

Basically, you have to look see what kind of file you can't view, what encoder was used, what decoder is being used in windows proper (not Vegas). If you're unsure, there are several tools available that give you specs on the file; gspot & wmplayer will tell you what's being used to decode on playback.

FWIW, there are a bunch of DV codecs out there, several with some sort of VFW support built in or added on. Whether that's the cause or not, they aren't always 100% compatible with the Vegas DV codec.

what are the source formats you are using?

Thank you for helping me out on this one!

I'm not using the split screen function so I'm sure that's not the problem.

I did read Mike's earlier post regarding conflicting codes and I have tried DXMan to sort things out. As far as I can see the Ligos codec are not active...

The source format I’ve used is the one you get when capturing video with Video Capture 4.0 (Vegas).

So perhaps there is a conflict since Vegas should be able to handle files captured with Video Capture 4.0?

Did you do a DV transfer or did you do an analog capture? If the latter, then need to see what codec that file was encoded with, and if it will play outside of Vegas. IF it was DV, is the footage good anywhere else, in wmplayer?

I did a DV transfer and it does not play outside vegas (or inside).

I checked the captured files in GSpot and it says that the codec is misconfigured...

Have you tried changing the 'Ignore third party codecs' setting on the 'General' tab in Options->Preferences?

I tried disabling ’ignore third party codec’ but I still can’t play any clips from the timeline. I’m thinking that it shouldn’t be that hard since I used Vegas Video Capture for all my clips…

Ok.

I tried removing and reinstalling some codecs and I’m now able to play the files captured with Vegas Video Capture in media player… When I checked with GSpot it seems that I now have four (4) different codecs capable of playing this type of file (!).

Inside Vegas Video there is no change… The video preview window still doesn't work :(
