Color correct hot spots

Lili wrote on 4/13/2009, 6:24 AM
I have a video of a guy who was filmed under pot lights with no fill-in lighting so his nose and forehead look very hot, while the rest of his face is normal to dark.

What iwould be the best method (if there is a way) for toning down the hot spots? I can live with the rest, but the bright areas are making this nice looking guy look like a monster. Yikes -\:-(

Much thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

it's tough to correct overexposed spots. there is probably no data there to correct as it is in the superwhite range. may be able to use some levels or curves to help, maybe some masking, but your in a tough spot.

Apply a levels filter and try autolevels first. If that doesn't work show the video scopes and look at the waveform and luminance. The brights of the image (the highlights) should go no higher than 100%. Manually adjust levels to bring it down (if you can).

Jeremy, thanks for the reminder about that fix .
I'm going to be editing a video shortly that has a lot of blown out footage in it (no, I didn't shoot it) and this fix will make me a hero to the person I'm doing it for :-)
