I usually start with an "S" curve in color curves. This will enhance the color. You can also add some contrast there bringing the low end down. I also find using the color corrector in conjuction works well. Billy boys tutorials will help.

Do this affect the rendering time? I finished and started the render and it was at 17 hours and still climbing when I cancelled it. It's a 75 minute show, it usually takes me about 1 1/2 to render something this long.

Yes any effects will hit your render time. However, I find that the estimates are based on what section Vegas is rendering. If it's a slow complex effects area it thinks the rest of the project is the same which can be misleading.

I once did a project with a lot of color correction that took like 30 hours for an hour video.

Long but worked well in the end.
