Color correction wheels

vitalforce2 wrote on 2/7/2003, 3:51 PM
I just downloaded the V4 manual (boxed V4 is on order) and there's nothing about how to use/tweak/create/paint with, the 2 color wheel plugins. I can't find any literature on the technique of color-wheel enhancement at the local store (J&R Computer World book section, Manhattan) either--not even by analogy with Final Cut Pro books. Anyone have ideas on how to get a head start on this? I'm about to start editing a DV dramatic film.

Download the White Paper on the Vegas 4 download section of the website. That seems to have a pretty good overview of what you can do.

I'm certain that Douglas Spotted Eagle's book, "Mastering Vegas+DVD" will cover this in great detail.

Did you get the beta? The help files for V4 contain a good start on understanding the use of these color wheels. Granted, there is a LOT more to it, but it is a start.

I'm feeling pressure to write a tutorial. LOL!

Who wants to volunteer to send me a SMALL 5 second or so video or a still that I could use as a how-to for the tutorial? Don't be shy, just understand if I pick your sample you're allowing me to include in the tutorial and put it on the web.

For starters a over exposed, under exposed, and color shaded clip would be nice or something with badly faded or too much saturation. Anyone willing PLEASE just a quick description here in the forum first so I don't get my email boxed flooded. We can kind of make it a group effort. Just briefly explain what's wrong. Then I'll give the 'lucky winners' my email address.

oooh, oooh, pick me, pick me, BillyBoy, pick me!
I have a piano concert that I shot the day I got a Canon XL1. I erroneously shot it in "auto" and didn't even do a white balance. The face and hands are a bit washed out and I've not been successful correcting it satisfactorily. The pianist is a college prof that would like to use it as a demo for outside gigs and I feel terrible that I didn't use manual settings (and the fact that I used the on-camera mic but that's another story).
TIA for you consideration BillyBoy,

I have a sample you could use as well. It's also
a recital (my daughter's violin recital). I had
two cameras, both set to auto (neither can do a
manual white-balance). One looks fine, the other has
an orange cast. I can provide both if you want your
tutorial to include using the color correction wheels
(maybe even the video scopes) to match different clips.

I'm not completely satisfied with my efforts to match
them so far, so I'd love to see a tutorial.

Well heck,

I was doing a quickie on the subject, so I won't get too elaborate... I'll leave that to BB and the other CC mavens.

While BB and the others put the in-depth toots together, feel free to dip a toe in the color-correction pool:

OK, seems we got a couple volunteers, sounds like fairly typical problems, I'll take a stab at it.

I just checked my email address I have listed in for the forum and it is out of date, so here's the new one. Send here: wvg@wideopenwest.com

Nice tutorial Marty!

Billy:

I have a clip that is underexposed and color cast (toward red) that a friend of mine shot on her XL-1 without color balancing. And it's a bit funny too. Dallas actor (and friend of mine), Chad Kline.

Excuse me for using the forum, my email server is going up and down like a yoyo for the past few hours.

Randy, send either or both. Dave, I'll try to download yours now assuming I don't lose my connection. Jon send it to me if you like.

They all sound different enough which should be interesting.

TIA!

Thanks Billyboy, they do all sound interesting. Not all the same problem, either.
