Colorless Text

impact wrote on 8/7/2003, 7:25 AM
When placing text over a clip in my latest project, the selected color of the letters did not show in the preview window nor did the color appear after rendering and printing to tape. I merely got a clear outline of the text. However, the color appeared on the timeline. It also appeared in the preview window when I moved the title track over my selected video track. This was my third project with Vegas 4.0 and I had no problem with the first two projects. HELP!

More clues needed.

How did you place the text over the clip?

If it was on a track above there could be quite a few reasons, if something looks wrong in preview printing to tape isn't going to make it look better.

I add a video track above the track containing my video clips. I go into Media Generators and select scrolling text or text. I selcect the default transparent option. I drag it to the added video track and create my title adding color and etc. The title appears in the added track just as I created it. However, on playback the color does not appear in the text in the Preview Window. If I drag the added (text) track to trim, while doing so the title appears in color in the Preview Window. But that is it! Colorless titles when played back.

Are you putting the Text on a seaprate track above the video track? That's the way to do it. I couldn't work out if you have placed the Text on the same and "over" the exsisting video clip - this is not above - ie track1 Text track 2 video. Now if you have done this then I apologise.

Also make sure the compositing mode of the text track is set to Source Alpha. We had a go-round with something very similar to this a few weeks ago and it stumped everyone until we got a look at a screen shot and a sharp-eyed individual, PeterWright, noticed that problem.

Thanks for responding! Grazie, yes, I do have my text track as a separate track above the video track. Chienworks, my compositing mode on the text track is set at Source Alpha. However, the titles have no color in the Preview Window, yet do on the track.

impact, can you send us a screenshot and the .veg file for us all to examine? If you want to send it to testbench@vegasusers.com i'll post it so that everyone can get a look. Someone out there should be able to figure out the problem.

Something crucial may lie in your: "I select the default transparent option". Please explain. If it's default you shouldn't have to select it. The default text is white on transparent background.

Although not the default selection, there is a 'transparent text' as an option for text events that has a blue background with clear text. The blue is 'just off' the default chroma key default so it wouldn't get completely erased. It would leave an outline or the edge of the text.

Is it possible that you have a chroma key (or similar) plugin on some track or even the video bus that's acting on your text event?

franco, Thank you for your response and to all others responding to my question. Franco you solved my problem. As a new Vegas user I must have inadvertantly hit the plug-in just as you suspected. All is fine now. Again, thank you to all.
