Colour shift in Deshaker

Malcolm D wrote on 4/20/2010, 12:37 PM
I am trying to deshake HDV material using New Deshaker in Vegas 8.0c.
The color levels are going from sRGB to cRGB after they came back from deshaking in VirtualDub. Near whites become burnt out.
I am using Outbound Template HDV 1080-50i intermediate.
Compress 0
Compress Inbound ticked.
Renderer Main Concept MPEG-2
Template HDV 1080-50i
This fixed the PAR issue I had but I still have the sRGB to cRGB issue.
There must be several people here deshaking HDV
Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong or how to fix it?
A step by step guide would be appreciated.
Thanks
Malcolm

I have run into this as well except that I compensate with the Cineform codec settings. My settings won't help someone who is not working with Cineform though, and I can't help but feel like I am going through an unnecessary double color conversion.

I had the same problem with DV PAL. I use the Mainconcept DV codec to transfer files between Vegas and VirtualDub. When I set the Enconder to RGB 16…235 and the Decoder to RGB 16…235 in the Mainconcept DV codec Configuration screen, there are no colour shifts.

Malcolm, I don’t work with HDV but my advice is this: Open VirtualDub, choose Video and Compression. There you will find a list of codecs you can use when you transfer clips between Vegas (the NewDeshaker script) and VirtualDub (the Deshaker plug-in).

As you can see, you cannot configure the Uncompressed codec and that’s your problem. You must find a codec that allows you to define the input and output colour levels (sRGB or cRGB) - as in my example with DV footage. Then you must apply the correct colour settings in VirtualDub (both for the incoming and outgoing clips). If you cannot find an suitable codec, you must find / purchase a codec that you can configure in VirtualDub. (Or a codec that automatically picks up the correct colour leves.)

You must specify this codec in NewDeshaker under VirtualDub Compressor (where uncompressed is the default).
