"Combine" and "Normalize" doesn't

After setting Channels to "Combine" and turning on the "Normalize" switch, I find that the level has NOT been normalized to the peak value set in Preferences. It's quite a bit lower, and I have to increase the track volume manually. Doing "Normalize" and then "Combine" also doesn't work, though it produces a somewhat different result.

Using Vegas Pro 8 here (you didn't say which).

I am unable to duplicate your observation, using a calibrated stereo test tone. Normalizes to full level whether channels are combined or not.

The most likely explanation is that some peaks in your material are combining in phase to bring it to full range, thus Normalize is not able to work.

It's Vegas Pro 9, latest update.

If the channels were summing to -.1 dBFS or higher, I should be seeing it somewhere in the waveform and meter, right? I'm not.

Expand the timeline out and look for a glitch possibly right at the beginning or end of the file. If you still find nothing, you may have uncovered a bug in Vegas Pro 9.
