combining projects into one

Lili wrote on 7/23/2004, 12:36 PM
This is a pretty basic question, but I'm totally new to editing with Vegas and could use a bit of help now and then. Here it goes: I have 4 projects that I want to combine into a single project.
Does anyone know the best way (maybe the ONLY way) to do this?
One day I hope to be able to come to YOUR aid - look forward to that day for sure.
P.s. I'm in Toronto. It would be interesting to know where (if) anyone replies where they are from. I can't be the only Vegonite in TO can I??? tanks

Here's the way *I* do it:

1) Render each of the projects to separate DV-AVI files
2) Start a new project
3) Add the rendered pieces to that new project.
4) Print to tape

It is possible to open up two (or more) instances of Vegas and copy & paste between them. This sometimes more or less works. If your track arrangements differ significantly between projects then expect some very messy results.

If you have finished editing the individual pieces then jetdv's advice is very quick and easy.

Hi , thanks for your reply. I need to combine the 4 project files BEFORE I edit them as they are all the same subject but shot on different days. I want to be able to work with all of my clips sitting in a single project file. Can I do this.?

Lilia,
What do you have in your existing projects? Just raw media? Trimmed media? Actual tracks and editing and such? Why were they originally kept separate? How far along you are may dictate the best course of action. It's not an easy question because I don't think there's any straightforward way to do it.

Jayson - I had four tapes that I transferred from my PD 170- into Vegas 5.0 and each went into a separate file name. I then deleted all the unwanted clips from each file and now want to combine them so I can finish editing and render as one file.
The reason I kept them separate is that I didn't know how to transfer 4 tapes into the same file. Duhhhhh - told you....as basic as they come.

Lilia, so in this case you haven't actually started arranging on the timeline in Vegas yet? You merely have the clips you want stored on the hard drive? If so, simply begin a new project and add all the clips to the media pool.

Chienworks is right(of course). Also, if you have trimmed media you want to retain but no tracks yet, then open a new projects and your old projects in separate windows, and drag the trimmed clips from the old projects Media Pool to the new projects media pool.

Copy tracks is dicey; I think just copying media clips is reliable.
