Compositing

Just went through my mail after being away for a few days, and there was my boxed VMS Platinum pacakage...Won't have time to install next weekend, but spent time looking through manuals, leading to this question...

Can someone explain what compositing is, what it does, how to do it, what it accomplishes, what do "parent" and "child" have to do with it???

(guess that was more than just one question)

General idea of compositing is to "compose" what you see on the screen by combining multiple tracks. A simple example is to have an upper track have some transparency, thus allowing parts of the lower track to show through.

I'm sure others will chime in with better examples and explanations, but here's my general tip: download the manual for the "full" version of Vegas. You can do so for free from the Sony site. In it you'll find good examples and explanations of compositing, parent/child, etc. And, in general, you'll find more thorough explanations and examples than in the Movie Studio manuals.
