Compression

What's the best way to compress a video? I make music video type videos, that go all over the internet, and I'm wondering what the best way to compress your videos would be for it to have great quality, and the absolute best compression. I currently have DivX Pro 5.2.0, I set it on 3000 kbit, 1-pass, on the lowest speed, for best compression/quality. With the audio using MPEG Layer-3 at 56kbit, and most videos I make can around 3-4 minutes long, and be 130MB, or more. The quality of them is still iffy. Any help, on better compression/codecs?

Try Windows Media 9. With Bit rate VBR averaging 512 K you can usually get a pretty sharp image at around 2MB/minute.

Remember that quality is generally inversely proportional to the amount of compression and directly proportional to file size.

Dont mean to jump in, but what do you mean by quality is directly proportional to file size...? The bigger the file in general, the crappier? better? Is this in regard to streaming as opposed to conventional NTSC DV? I understand about quality and compression...

THank you!

Directly proportional means the values of the items move together. As file size increases (in general) quality also increases. Of course, more compression results in smaller files, so as the compression increases (in general) the quality decreases.

This applies to any lossy compression, whether it be streaming, DV, music, photographs, or whatever.
