Computer Restarts when placing text

My computer (new Sony Vaio with Windows XP, P4 1.6 GHZ, 512 MB Ram, 80GB HD) restarts when I try and adding a text event and position it on the screen. Is anyone experiencing this? Should I defrag my hard drive? Would upgrading to the patch help?
