I just realized that both Vegas 8.0c and 8.1 show either 1920x1080x12 for AVCHD or 1440x1080x12 for HDV in both the explorer and project media tabs when the media is selected.
I bumped this thread, because I have never seen an explanation of what the last digit in the Preview Window info (width x height x ???) stands for.
Sebaz is correct that if you click on the media properties:
AVCHD shows 1920x1080x12 & HDV shows 1440x1080x12
An 8 bit HDV project will show its properties in the Preview Window as 1440x1080x32 and a 32 bit HDV project will show as 1440x1080x128. My guess is that Vegas shows the bit depth multiplied by the number of channels (4).
But why are the AVCHD & HDV media files showing as ... 12? Further, a 10 bit Cineform HD file's media properties show as:
1920x1080x32
That seems to blow my theory <sigh>. This isn't a burning issue, but it would be nice to know what the Preview Window info means. BTW, the last digit in the Preview Window "Display" info has to do with the color depth that you have set in Windows for your display driver (16, 24 or 32 bit).
Either this is just an obscure calculation bug (since it doesn't affect functionality in any way) or the bit-depth number for media files has some other factor built into like chroma subsampling (4:2:2, etc.). DV files show the right bit depth (24 or 32), but HD files do not. In addition to those listed above in this thread, an HD Morgan MJPEG2K file shows 1920x1080x16 and a Canon 5D MKII MOV file shows 1920x1080x24. Maybe someone from SCS will eventually stumble across this thread and let us know what the answer is to the puzzle. Maybe SCS should make it a contest, with the winner getting a free version of Vegas Pro 9.0, when it's available.
