Confused about Hitfilm plug-ins and where are some of my plug-in?

TTTT wrote on 1/30/2019, 9:02 AM

Hello,

I started using HitFilm plug-ins in most of my projects when they came with a former Vegas Pro suite. And I must say I neglected keeping up to date with these as long as my projects worked.

I think that the most advanced license for Hitfilm was for Hitfilm 3 with Vegas Pro 13 suite.

I don't remember when things changed exactly but not Vegas Pro 16 suite comes with Ignite Pro plug-ins (which looks like a branch from Hitfilm products).

Now installing a new computer, if I install Ignite Pro plug-ins, my projects crash with hundreds of error messages that I need to click.

So I search for the most advanced version of "(non-ignite) Hitfilm plug-ins" that I seem to have license for and it's "Hitfilm 3"

If I install Hitfilm 3 on top of Ignite Pro plug-ins, some plug-ins are prefixed Hitfilm, others are prefixed Ignite.

I couldn't now truely test it the other way around, installing Ingite Pro on top of Hitfilm 3 because after uninstalling both and re-installing only Hitfilm 3, I still had the Ignite plug-ins prefixed "Ignite".

I'm assuming that the plug-ins that remain prefixed Hitfilm are not part of Ignite (/anymore)

Some of these are plug-ins I used a lot, mostly "Hitfilm Color Temperature", "Hitfilm Bleach Bypass", "Hitfilm Cine Style", ... and some used more occasionally ("Hitfilm Hue Shift", "Hitfilm Treshold", ...)

My question now is: were these plug-ins discontinued? Are they part of another Hitfilm product? (I don't really understand what plug-in you get for buiying Hitfilm Express/Pro/Studio or if Ignite is now the plug-ins and Hitfilm is other piece of software.

And If they were discontinued, were they replaced by other plug-ins? (Mainly Color Temperatures, but the other too)

And if I buy a more complete and more recent Hitfilm package, will I get updated versions? And will they be compatible with my former projects?

Thank you for your help

Not all of those plugins installed on the Vegas Suite are licensed and you probably did not do the right steps to switch off the not licensed plugins that came with that Suite version , so they will give every time a no-licensed message.
Don't know how those behave with other ever bought licenses.

I didn't say anything about a "no-licensed message" and I didn't get any.

All plug-ins are licence,

some come from HitFilms (Pro?) 3 provided with Vegas Pro 13 suite

some come from (HitFilms) Ignite (Pro?) provided with Vegas Pro 16 suite

some are included in both.

Thank you but this answer doesn't answer at all to the situation explained in the original post.

VEGAS Pro bundles a few basic HitFilm Plug-Ins, like 5 or so:

HitFilm Bleach Bypass, HitFilm Scan Lines, HitFilm TV Damage, HitFilm Vibrance

Those have nothing to do with your HitFilm or Ignite Installations. They're bundled with the VEGAS Pro NLE (at least since VP14, IIRC, maybe earlier) or licensed with HitFilm Pro or to 3rd parties as part of subset Effect packages (i.e. HitFilm Cine, HitFilm 360, HitFilm Movie Essentials, etc.) will be prefixed with HitFilm. They are the same as the plugins from Ignite Express/Pro Prefixed with Ignite.

All Ignite is, is a repackaging of the HitFilm Pro plug-ins in a format for use in 3rd party NLEs.

If you have both HitFilm Pro and Ignite Pro installed, and HitFilm Pro exposes its effects for use in 3rd party NLEs, then you will end up with tons of duplicates.

To drop the dependence on HitFilm 3, you need to replace the HitFilm Plugins in your project with Ignite Pro plug-ins. They have different names (HitFilm X vs. Ignite X), so they will not auto-replace if you open a project using HitFilm plugins without HitFilm installed on that PC ;-)

IMO, switch to Ignite Pro plug-ins, finish the projects you used HitFilm plug-ins for, and then uninstall HitFilm Pro 3 when you're done (if you don't need it anymore).

You can always reinstall it later if you need to load an old project, but this will get rid of the clutter... Just make sure you stop using the HitFilm-prefixed plugins, except for the 4 I listed above (which should be in Ignite Pro... so I'd honestly avoid those, as well)...

VEGAS Pro bundles a few basic HitFilm Plug-Ins, like 5 or so:

I got at least like 20 or 40 ... but I didn't buy "Vegas Pro", I bought "Vegas Pro Suite" and received licence keys for Hitfilm/Ignite Pro each time. The licence gets activated and I don't get any licence dialog or watermark or anything.

They are the same as the plugins from Ignite Express/Pro Prefixed with Ignite.

All Ignite is, is a repackaging of the HitFilm Pro plug-ins in a format for use in 3rd party NLEs.

That's how it is supposed to be but actually some plug-ins from Hitfilm Pro 3 are missing from Ignite (or they have a totally different name, not just the prefix, and I haven't noticed them in the list but then could someone point them based on the name I mentioned in original post?

If you have both HitFilm Pro and Ignite Pro installed, and HitFilm Pro exposes its effects for use in 3rd party NLEs, then you will end up with tons of duplicates.

No, since I test it this afternoon. No duplicates, most plug-ins get renamed with the "Ignite" prefix, but don't remember if there was any duplicate, I mean if they were all systematically duplicated, I would have noticed that and had a much longer list.

To drop the dependence on HitFilm 3, you need to replace the HitFilm Plugins in your project with Ignite Pro plug-ins. They have different names (HitFilm X vs. Ignite X),

Yes, I know that I can somehow get rid of that dependence, but I'm not talking about only one project.

Yet, that means that I have to go through all the tracks/event that have effects on them and replicate them in Ignite plug-ins ... which is as stupid as a breaking change can get, especially just for a name change (I work in software development, believe me this is just plainly idiotic to introduce breaking changes just for a name).

Also I like to be able to go back to some past projects and means current software won't be compatible with projects done for the last ~4 or 5 years.

While Vegas, I think, is still compatible with Vegas projects I made without plug-ins like 15 years ago.

so they will not auto-replace if you open a project using HitFilm plugins without HitFilm installed on that PC ;-)

If you open a project using HitFilm plugins and have Ignite plugins installed, they do not auto-replace, you just get all the effects removed on all the tracks/event (including Vegas native effects) (well not all, one event had kept some "Vegas Color Corrector (Secondary)" and I know why there was that exception), but all other effects were gone. (I had backup.)

This shows some unsmart way of Vegas to manage plug-ins changes ...

I'm sometimes considering leaving Vegas for some other softwares due to stability issues.

Now, what made Vegas such a great software for me was to get all the Hitfilm Plug-ins that were distributed with the "Vegas Pro Suite", but if Hitfilm/Ignite is not reliable and doesn't care making such breaking changes in their products, makes the whole things look quite unprofessionnal, that's another point to consider other softwares.

There are duplicates. I wrote this reply while looking at my screen with VEGAS Pro opened up, showing HitFilm and Ignite duplicates in my Video FX list... … ...

TTTT wrote on 2/9/2019, 12:25 PM

I've been in touch with HitFilm support service. how it looks now:

- [Hope] Ignite Pro is supposed to have all the past and present HitFilm plug-in … and I have hopes that the name change is not the reason why project compatibility breaks but that instead, overcome the installation problems would solve it all.

- [Old bug?] HitFilm Pro 3 skips approximately 8 plug-ins when uninstalling. I have noticed on my previous computer, which has never seen Ignite Pro 4 but only HitFilm Pro 3, that these are precisely the plug-ins that appears in Vegas list under the "HitFilm" category without a subcategory, which leads me to suspect that the fact that they are not categorized may have to do with the reason they're skipped when uninstalling.

- These plug-ins that are not automatically uninstalled can be deleted manually from C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX\Plugins

- At some point, I also re-installed Vegas Pro 16

- After this I did what seems like a really clean installation of Ignite Pro 4

- [Recent bug?] Following this clean installation, Vegas gives me ~117 error messages … Even when opening an empty project, so it was not project related as I initially though in previous posts.

I checked the two plug-in subdirectories in C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX\Plugins , *.hfpl files do indeed exist for the plug-ins that I'm missing (like for example Color Temperature and Cine Style ...) and many more but for some, including those I need, they do not appear in Vegas list.

I actually have 187 *.hfpl files installed from Ignite Pro 4, but I counted only approximately 118 plug-ins showing in Vegas. (This 118 could be linked to the “approximately 117 error messages” I mentioned earlier)

Which means that approximately 70 plug-ins are not showing in Vegas, including plug-ins my projects use.

I am still hoping for more feedback from HitFilm’s support, but if some of you have ideas, they would be welcome because all my video projects are suspended in the meantime, because it would be very nice if everything works with the most recent versions of the plug-ins, but I don’t want to have to spend hours uninstalling re/installing everything/restarting computer etc, each time some suggests a new solution.

Yes, the only version of Ignite Pro 4 that I have tested is 4.0.8528.10801 and that is still the latest version on their site. Note that I also tested with Ignite Pro 2 with a version that was suggest in the previous I mentioned in my previous post and the results were exactly the same.
