Confused!!! Project vs. Render Settings???

Okay, I've mainly used Vegas for creating web videos of different sizes, but now that I have a Canon HV20 I want to create some DVD's, but I'm confused about what settings I should select.

I think I want the project settings to match the aspect ratio that the HV20 captures (1440 x 1080) is this correct?

And then when I render for DVD, I'll choose the NTSC DV Widescreen...right?

That's what I've always done with success. I've had some quirks with HDV source footage with DV Widescreen project setting. Never a problem with HDV 1080 project setting.

The render settings are the only thing that matter when making the finished output. The project settings aren't used at all. However, that being said, it's a good idea to set the project settings to match the render settings so that while you're working on the project the preview will be correct. It's more useful to match the output settings than to match the source settings.

- and if your project setting resoloution is lower than the resoloution for the finished output you might risk that generated media, like text and titles, appear coarse and edgy because the generated media is made and stored at the lower project resoloution.

Actually your project settings do affect rendered output in two areas:

1) The de-interlace method has an impact if rescaling or changing frame rates.

2) The audio resampling quality can only be set at the project level. Normally doesn't make any difference and just slows things down. Unless you've got say audio from a CD on the T/L.

Bob? As our colleague here is "Confused" would you care to expand a bit on your:

"1) The de-interlace method has an impact if rescaling or changing frame rates.

If in the project properties the deinterlace method is set to "None" rendering doesn't care for deinterlacing at all even if the field order is set to progressive in the render dialog. You have to set the deinterlace method in the project properties to either "Blend" or "Interpolate" to be able to use deinterlacing for the rendering.

How to try to explain this?

Half the resolution of each frame is in each field, if a new set of fields needs to be built then the optimal approach is to combine the two fields to try to get a full res frame from which to build the new fields.

Probably the most dramatic example is when converting PAL to NTSC, with no de-interlace method set you can get horrid artifacts. I call them dogs teeth (just to differentiate them from the commonly named mice teeth of normal interlace artifacts). Of course conversion from PAL to NTSC is an extreme test as it involves both rescaling (the frame sizes are different) and interpolation (the frame rates are different).

To look at it the other way around. There's no down side to specifying a de-interlace method. I just use Blend in my default project properties.

I wish I could find a reference to this issue somewhere on the web but I've never found one, pictures / diagrams would sure help.

Matching Project Settings to your source can give better "Preview" performance.

In the Vegas manual under the section entitled "Creating custom rendering settings for AVI files" (somewhere around page 240-244 depending upon which Vegas version you are using) it states in the second paragraph:

"Final render settings override Project Properties settings".

However, I would imagine that if you Print to Tape from the timeline, it would use the Project Properties settings.

That's correct for any of the properties that you can define in the final render settings, for the properties that you cannot specify in the final render settings, such as de-interlace method and audio resampling quality the project properties are used.

However there's some traps with mp3 tags where values defined in the project properties do take precedence over the final render settings.
