Confusion about velocity envelope

I'm confused. I was going through my project when I saw a clip that I thought would look good near the beginning of the project if I were to run the clip backwards. I copied the clip into the trimmer & make a precise selection. I noted the exact length of the clip & then went to the place on the timeline where I wished to insert the clip placed the cursor there & inserted the required amount of time. I dragged the clip from the trimmer & it fitted exactly. I then clicked this clip & inserted a velocity envelope which I dragged down to exactly -100%. I had expected the clip to play in reverse. What I got was a clip playing in reverse but not the one I had dragged to the timeline, instead I had the clip immediately prior to what I had selected playing in reverse. What did I do wrong & how do I fix this?

Vegas is taking your start point (ie the first frame in the timeline) and running backwards from there. To get the effect you want, you need to make the last point from the trimmer the first point on the timeline. You could use Alt+drag the clip on the timeline to slip the clip to the bit you want.

This might sound a little odd, but when you consider that Vegas offers velocity envelopes from -100% to +300%, with multiple points and ramps in between, it makes sense. Also, realise that the clip length on the timeline is not really a defined clip that you are altering, but rather a window to view the clip which you are affecting with the velocity envelope. ie, as you change the velocity envelope the clip time on the timeline remains constant - you just get to see more or less of the clip.

Clear as mud?

Just as a sideline to this question, is it possible to sync the audio to the speed in the timeline. Some clips that I am using could be mildly amusing with a fast forward or fast rewind audio in it. Slowing them down could be quite effective as well. As of yet, I have found no way to do this.

Thanks for your help.

oneeyets, if you only need a constant speed in a forward direction, then changing the speed of the clip is as simple as holding the Ctrl key down while you drag the right edge of the clip. "Squish" it to the left to speed it up or "stretch" it to the right to slow it down. This adjusts both audio and video in sync.
