Connection

I'm new to Vegas Movie Studio 9 and really just wanted it for my home movies. I have a JVC video camera and went to Best Buy and purchased a USB cable that has the USB connection on one end, and several other connectors on the other (one of which fits my JVC camera perfectly). When I plugg the USB connector into the USB port, my computer identifies it and tells me it's been detected and is ready to use. However, the software for Vegas Movie Studio 9 tells me there is no device connected. Can anyone on here help me with this problem?

Usually you would use a firewire cable to connect your camera to your PC (also known as an IEEE 1394 cable). What is your camera model?

Yeah, and I don't have a firewire port on my laptop. My connection cable that HAS the USB cable also has a firewire, I just don't have something to insert it into. My camera model is GR-D370U. It is not by any means a professional video camera and I get the feeling that usually this type of software is used with professional cameras...

Your USB cable almost certainly doesn't have firewire connectors. It's a different kind of cable and unlikely that a single cable could carry both USB and firewire signals. USB has about 5 different size and shape connectors so your cable is probably designed to let you connect to all the different USB plugs without adapters.

That aside, USB is a disaster for capturing. Don't even bother trying it. Go to newegg.com and get a firewire adapter for your computer and a firewire cable. You shouldn't have to pay more than $10 for the adapter and $15 for the cable. The functionality and quality will be worlds better than suffering through with USB.

I swear it's got both. Ha. It's called a Sima and it's USB Multi-Cable with FireWire... It says it's IEEE 1394 Firewire and says it supports all FireWire connectors.

So hopefully as long as I just get the adapter, I should be ok? And then would my software possibly recognize the cable?

To simplify Chienwork's explanation, Vegas capture supports firewire connections. It is explained in the documentation, and it is that simple.

As others have mentioned, it looks like firewire is your only option. The cable you have doesn't connect translate USB to firewire or vice versa.

Your PC recognises the camera when connected via USB as you can transfer still pictures using such a connection. Unfortunately video can't be transferred this way so it will be a problem for any application, not just Vegas.

Juergen and Chienworks: thank you so much for all your help! All I wanted was something simple and my dad bought me this so I've been confused from day one with cables and what-not. I will look into that FireWire adapter and see what happens from there. :) :) :)
