I'm running a
Asus P6E motherboard with an Intel i7 CPU 920@2.67Ghz
12 gig of RAM
Gainsborough Nvidia Geforce GTX570 graphics card

I have about 400 gig of mxf. files to cut, could that be the issue?

Many thanks to those who reply.

Phil

If you have MediaInfo post a screen shot of the MXF file specifications; it could be a codec issue.

Could be because of that many files. What happens if you try to edit a single one?

I'm not sure what you mean. The footage was shot on an XDCam F800, does that give you an idea of file structure?

Source video on an internal drive or a USB external? Try internal.

Yep already done that.

I've had to start cutting it on Premiere, which is so sloooow! Thankfully I've got an understanding client.

Interestingly Vegas has somehow corrupted some of the files, in particular the ones it stumbled over, as they can't be opened by Premiere either. (Top tip always have a back copy!)

I suspect its purely down to data overload, I've got about 500 gig of footage which Vegas clearly can't handle. When I'm bin-ing up the footage, things start going nipples up when you pass the 400 gig of footage mark. I suspect its struggling with all the .mxf file data. I initially ingested using the XDCam explorer (note to Sony, you need to make an option for ingesting from downloaded footage and not just from disk. I nearly got caught out by only ingesting proxy files which after editing would have required the original disk to auto conform. I imagine most people who use XDCam disks download the footage to a drive and scrub the disk to start again for the next shoot, this could have been my worst nightmare!)

Ultimately its a shame, as although I'm sure Premiere is a very powerful tool, it's nowhere near as fast as Vegas for cutting. But stuck with constant crashes I suspect my 11 year love affair with Vegas has come to an end....quivering bottom lip.

Cheers

Phil

i just have to ask out of curiosity - what's the project!?

i've had around 300gigs (of hdv) in one project, but i would never have dreamed of trying to load that into any nle.

surely you don't need all of it at once do you?

this is surely a perfect example for sectional editing...

+1 with Ushere. The thought of losing that much work in one go is giving me the heebie jeebies! :-)

Don't laugh but its my sons school video, albeit a high quality one!

There's a combination of XDCam F800 footage and Canon 7D second unit camera, shooting over a 11 day period, hence the size.

The problem I have is I need to see all the footage as I'm cutting several videos from it.

Interestingly Premiere is dealing with it?? Why not Vegas??

and every frame is priceless? ;-)

i am sure that even a mild culling would probably halve what you have.

interesting that ppro is handling it.

if you insist with working with ALL the footage at the same time i'd be using low res proxies....
TheHappyFriar wrote on 9/3/2014, 6:32 PM
I wouldn't work with proxies, I'd plan ahead and not even bring in footage I don't want to use. :)

EDIT:

Either way, there was no troubleshooting as far as I can see in this thread so you don't know what the problem was. could be those video files were bad and causing issues, you just assumed it was vegas. After all, you did say Premiere wouldn't work until you replaced those files.
