Constant Crashing

Vegas 11 64 bit (and previously Vegas 9 64 bit) is constantly crashing.

I have gone through the check list.

- Updated video card driver
- running newest version build 701
- No Wacom Tablet
- Compatibility set to Windows 7
- No NewBlue Titler installed
- No third part effects

Additional efforts I've made:

- Restored computer to factory condition and only installed windows updates and video card driver update (driver update from manufactures site.)
- Partitioned hard drive and installed only Vegas 11 on partitioned area.
- No further software installed (aside from what came with factory install and Firefox)

More info:

- Tried editing in pixel format 8 bit and 32 bit but both crash.
- Monitored RAM usage and never exceeded 4.5 GB.

Additional Details:

- Project using 10 layers
- Media includes mts, mov, mpg, jpg, titles and mp3.
- Majority of video is HD 1920x1080 but some 720x480 mpg.
- Some of the JPGs are large in dimension. Around 4500 x 4500 but they do not exceed 3 MB in size.
- Contains 700 media files totaling 45 minutes in length
- A lot of zooming in using crop on both video and photos

The crash can happen at any time during the editing process, however it is most frequent after saving the project, then playing back at that particular spot on the timeline. i.e. Going back in the timeline to make adjustments, after adjustments are made a save is done (because the project crashes so often) and then playing back to review the adjustments that were made.

After crashing I get one of the two following error reports.

1)

I can use any suggestions. It is getting extremely frustrating,

Thank you

Bern.

It sounds like problems with source files. Can you create and edit a different project?

As a workaround, you might be able to transcode the offending source material (if you can identify which clips) into a format more pallettable to Vegas.

What is the health of your computer's cooling solution? Are fans clogged with lint or frozen? Has a heatsink's thermal interface been broken or disrupted? Have you run any temperature or fan monitoring software for both your CPU and video card?

Try setting the Dynamic Ram Preview to less than 200. You'll find this on the Preferences, Video tab. It cured my crashes on V11. Good luck.

Yes I was the first to find that setting RAM preivew to less than 200MB, zero preferably, and using the preview window undocked, ie dont use the preview video monitor tab, would reduce crashes to next to nothing. It was called herachy at times. Try it and let us know. BTW after doing that you should be able to come out of compatible mode and use GPU accl if your card supports it.

I set dynamic preview to 0 and undocked the preview window. I closed Vegas and restarted the computer. After restart, Vegas opened with 0 in the dynamic preview and the video preview window was already undocked.

Regretfully, this didn't help. Vegas continues to crash.

I'm thinking it is one of the different types of the media. I'm actually working for someone who actually created the project. I am here to try and fix the problem. I mention this because the media files are mixed up everywhere and to go through and remove each type of media would be time consuming. I am desperately trying to avoid it.

Yes, new projects can be created and edited. I've started a new project using the same media files. Adding one type, then trying to duplicate the crash but I have not had success yet.

I've been told by the person that created the project that when he created it originally in Vegas 9 that he was using the legacy text. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced an issue with Vegas 9 and legacy text.

I've just check the fan a week ago and everything appears to be alright. I'm uncertain of the heat sink. I'd like to do an analysis of the CPU and fan. Do you know of any free/open source software that would help?
