Contrast difference issues

I have a subtle but big problem with a movie I'm producing using vegas Pro 13.

I render at 1280-x720 using "Sony AVC/MVC Internet 1280x720-25p". If I bring that mp4 into Vegas it looks perfect.

However if I view the image in Windows media player the blacks seem deeper and there is a lack of definition in darker areas.

Here's three images of the same shot.

  1. Taken from Vegas
  2. Taken from Media player
  3. Taken from YouTube

It is quite subtle, but look at the brightness and colour of the character on the left and more noticeably the contrast and definition of the objects in the background. This problem is further exagerated if I burn a DVD.

So what's going on here? Vegas seems OK as same MP4 looks great in Vegas - it's just in everything else there's a problem.

Can I re-render using some sort of compensatory effect on Vegas so that the end result is what I'm looking for ?

Anyone else had issues with this ?

Thanks in advance....

Berty

Nick - what a useful article. I guess I just searched for the wrong things to find this as it would have answered all my questions...
