OOOPSS!!

Scratch that!!!

I 2xchecked the RM file I made. I thought I was only doing a minute of the clip - but it did the whole dang thing!!

Sweeet!!

Okay....so I can get the whole movie on my site as RealMedia.

But...any other thoughts on other formats?

Many people (me included) will not watch videos in REAL format. I don't want their software on my machine. This may be a factor.

Rendering to WMV format, I figure 1 meg/minute is a good target.

Good point.

I am one of those "many people" also. REAL is spyware, as far as I'm concerned.

"But...any other thoughts on other formats? "

I've seen people use mpg2, DiVX is always popular, & then there's quicktime and winmedia.

Mpg2, Quicktime, & DiVX require decoding software that are less likely to be installed already on the average viewer's system. Encoding to Quicktime is best done with the Sorrensen pro codec, so there's extra cost involved. Older winmedia 7.1 is safest, and you'll lose less quality then you might think if you use the media encoder 9. With winmedia 9 you'll run into the same problem as with real 9 - a lot of folks won't use the required players.

All that said, a lot of the decision is often made by what's running on the server, whether it can stream real or winmedia etc., so wouldn't hurt to check.

Some people won't watch Real Media because once upon a time their "free" package included a free gift... spyware. However then as now that can be removed, and you still can use the format which is overall very good. If you've never seen a RM movie at HIGHER bitrates your in for a plesant surprise. Many people have only see the cheesy 28.8 or 56K version. Try a small render a 1 MBPS and get ready to say wow.

Interesting read, but take with a few grains of salt.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

What I ended up doing was playing around with a bunch of different settings and found one that made my little Osar hopeful about 1 mb per min - so about 9 mb total. And it is in WMV format (which is what I was hoping for) ....

In the process - I got a pretty good feel for different formats, sizes, audio, etc. The lower "dial up" setting suck. But we all knew that. Broadband rules!!

Of course, the video looks super sweet loaded back out to DV tape and played on the bigscreen (TV that is).

Also - to play around with a 9 minute - six scence movie helps wrap my brain around what is involved in longer projects. I think I'll see if I can invent a piece of software that can render a 90 minute movie (uncompressed) in 15 seconds.

Think there would be a market for that?!?

Thanks again!!

Kameron J.
